Turn a Simple Prompt into an n8n Workflow
How to use N8Nitro's AI to Workflow generator: write prompts that work, review the draft in minutes, and avoid the common mistakes.
You know what you want the automation to do. You just don’t want to spend 20 minutes dragging nodes onto a canvas to say it.
That’s the idea behind AI to Workflow in N8Nitro: describe the automation in your own words (in any language your AI model supports), get an importable n8n workflow back, and finish it from there. This guide shows how to get good results from it, with prompts you can copy.
The problem it solves
Every n8n workflow starts with the same busywork: pick a trigger, connect a data source, reshape the data, choose a destination, wire it all together. None of it is hard. It’s just slow, and it’s the same slow every time.
An AI model is good at exactly that kind of first draft. It’s less good at knowing your exact tables, credentials and business rules. So the sweet spot is simple:
- The AI drafts the structure.
- You review it and fill in the specifics.
Think of it as a very fast junior colleague who sets up the skeleton, not an autopilot that finishes the job.
How it works
Four steps, and nothing runs until you say so:
1. Describe → 2. Review → 3. Export → 4. Connect & run
your idea the draft to your Nitro credentials, test
- Describe what you want in a few sentences.
- Review the draft. You get the workflow plus a short guide that explains each node and what you still need to configure.
- Export it to one of your Nitros with one click, or download the JSON file.
- Connect and run. Attach your credentials, run it once manually, then activate.
The workflow is created inactive, so it never runs before you’ve looked at it.
What you need first
AI to Workflow uses your own AI provider key (OpenAI, Anthropic, Gemini, Grok or Mistral). Add it once in Settings. You pay your provider directly, and there’s no markup from us.
Writing prompts that work
The model can’t read your mind, but it doesn’t need much. A good prompt answers five questions:
| Question | Example |
|---|---|
| When does it run? | Every weekday at 8am |
| Where does the data come from? | The orders table in Postgres |
| What happens to it? | Sum revenue by sales channel |
| Where does the result go? | A Google Sheet and a Slack message |
| What if something goes wrong? | If there are no rows, email me |
Before and after
Too vague
Make me a sales report workflow.
Much better
Every weekday at 8am, get yesterday's orders from Postgres, add up revenue by
sales channel, append the totals to a Google Sheet, and post a short summary
to #sales on Slack. If the query returns no rows, send me an email instead.
The second prompt gives the model a trigger, a source, a transformation, two destinations and a fallback. You’ll get a workflow that’s close to done instead of one you have to rewrite.
Prompt tips for analysts
- Write in your own language. Arabic, Spanish, French and more all work, as long as your AI model supports them. Just keep tool names as they appear in n8n (“Google Sheets”, “Slack”).
- Name your tools. “Postgres”, “Google Sheets” and “Slack” beat “my database” and “a spreadsheet”.
- Say how often. “Every hour”, “once a day at 7am” or “when a form is submitted”.
- Describe the shape of the data. “Rows with order_id, channel and amount” helps with the transformation step.
- Ask for the fallback. Error handling is the first thing people forget.
- Keep it to one job. One workflow, one purpose. Chain workflows together for bigger things.
Example: from prompt to draft
Using the sales report prompt above, the draft contains roughly these steps:
- Schedule Trigger to start at 8am on weekdays
- Postgres to fetch yesterday’s orders
- IF to check whether any rows came back
- Code or Aggregate to total revenue by channel
- Google Sheets to append the totals
- Slack to post the summary
- Email for the empty-result case
Next to each step you get a plain-language note, like this one for the Postgres step:
What it does: Pulls yesterday’s orders. What to configure: Attach your Postgres credentials and check the query’s date filter, for example
WHERE created_at >= CURRENT_DATE - 1.
That guide is the useful part. It tells you what to do next, instead of leaving you to reverse-engineer a canvas full of nodes.
Review before you activate
Spend two minutes on this checklist before turning anything on:
- Credentials. Every app node needs one attached. The generator never includes credentials.
- Queries and filters. Check table names, column names and date logic against your real data.
- Code and HTTP nodes. Read them. They run real code with access to your data.
- Run it manually once. Look at the output of each node, not just the last one.
- Then activate.
Common problems (and fixes)
A node shows up as unknown or broken. Occasionally a model suggests a node that doesn’t exist. Replace it with the closest real node, or describe the step differently in a new prompt.
The workflow is cut off or won’t import. Long, complicated requests can produce an incomplete draft. Split the job into two smaller workflows.
Different results each time. AI output varies. If the first draft isn’t right, tweak the prompt (add the detail it missed) and regenerate rather than patching a bad draft.
Settings look right but don’t work. Fields can differ slightly between n8n versions. Open each node once and confirm its settings.
You exported twice. You’ll have two workflows. Delete the one you don’t need.
When to use it, and when not to
Great for:
- Scheduled reports and data pulls
- Syncing data between tools
- Notifications and alerts
- Exploring which nodes could solve a problem
Better done by hand:
- Workflows that handle money or sensitive data
- Complex branching with lots of conditions
- Anything you already have a tested template for
Try it
- Start a Nitro if you don’t have one.
- Add your AI provider key in Settings.
- Open the AI page, paste a prompt like the one above, and generate.
- Review, export, attach credentials, test, and activate.
Start with something small and repetitive, such as a daily report. Once the first one works, you’ll know exactly how to ask for the next.
Frequently asked questions
What is AI to Workflow in N8Nitro?
It is a generator that turns a plain description of an automation into an importable n8n workflow draft, with a short guide explaining each node and what you still need to configure.
Which AI providers can I use?
OpenAI, Anthropic, Gemini, Grok and Mistral. You add your own API key once in Settings and pay your provider directly.
Does the generated workflow run automatically?
No. It is exported inactive, so nothing runs until you review it, attach credentials, test it and activate it yourself.
Does the draft include my credentials?
No. You attach credentials to each app node after importing the workflow.
Can I write the prompt in a language other than English?
Yes, in any language your AI model supports. Keep tool names as they appear in n8n, such as Google Sheets and Slack.
What if a node looks broken or unknown?
Occasionally a model suggests a node that does not exist. Replace it with the closest real node, or adjust the prompt and regenerate.
